Didn't plan on fixing Cash ever but now I'm considering it. I don't feel like I can get any real honest answers from the vets because they're all so pro fixing, so I'm here to ask all you boxer owners about your experiences. I have no intention of breeding Cash. I preferred not to fix Cash because I don't him to change at all. I enjoy his high energy, playfulness, attentiveness, and overall well fit physique. I was raised around all male boxers that weren't fixed. Cash was trying to hump at the last dog meetup so I figure I will have him fixed. I'm nervous about it though because I don't want him to change. I’ve read what the books say but I want to know from real people. Did any of you notice anything worth mentioning from fixing your male boxer? I'm worried Cash won’t be as playful and will want to be a lump on the couch. I'm worried he will be overweight. I'm worried he won't be as alert if he hears noises at night.

I have 3 males and 2 females you will not notice anything it just takes off the edge, he will still play like a mad dog, he will still hump (humping is a dominance thing not sexual, my female does all the humping) he will still lift his leg to pee on everything, it will create less fights (other dog challenging him) being a lump on the couch depends mostly on you but age will slow him down my 10yr old doesn't play as long as my 8yr old nor does my 8yr old play as long as my 4yr old. he will only gain weight if you feed him too much or don't exercise him as much. as far as alert I wish my 4yr old wasn't as alert as he is, my 8yr old knows the noises he needs to be concerned with, my 10yr old is deaf and he doesn't bark at all (thank God) at 90 lbs all he needs to do is just stand behind them
... I hope this helps....... Don |

I completely agree with Don. I am also sure your vet has mentioned the huge difference it could make it your dogs overall health as he gets older (Prostrate cancer?).
It's not as if the day you bring them from the vet from their neuter appointment you bring home a diffferent dog. Actually what you might be doing is preserving the one you have come to love. Not neutering could allow his hormones to escalate and that humping(dominance) could turn into a higher dominance drive and he could become aggressive towards other dogs and you would no longer be able to enjoy the dog park and other social activities. Couch lumps are caused by people. (lol, thats kinda funny) If you become lazy and sit on the couch your dog will eventually change to join you. Diet and exercise are all you need to keep your dog in that beautiful boxer form. As Boxers get older, its natural (just like humans) that they put on some weight and it takes more exercise to keep it off. Try a treadmill, the boxers love em. Good luck with your decision. Whichever it may be your dog wont mind. |

Thank you Don and Carlena. I will have Cash fixed with the confidence he will be the same floppidy goofball that he is. lol! I'm pretty sure that's not a word, but it's how I discribe him. I will just work with him on his humping at the dogs parks after he's fixed.
